Introduction
This course, with specialist majors in Critical Care Nursing, Neuroscience Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, is an extension of courses offered under the various Postgraduate Diplomas in Clinical Nursing. It is an industry collaborative course, designed to provide the theoretical foundations of nursing science, together with the clinical knowledge and skills associated with the major stream of the course. A significant component of the course is conducted in a health care institution. It focuses on the development of clinical leadership, promotion and integration of evidence-based nursing practice in each of the majors to foster the development of graduates consistent with the profile of the nurse specialist, offering the advanced practitioner further clinical skills and an opportunity to extend career options. It also provides the foundation for professional doctoral studies.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A bachelors degree in nursing or a related discipline, acceptance into or completion of a Curtin approved, postgraduate diploma level course conducted by a hospital or health care agency working in collaboration with the School of Nursing, two years post-registration qualification experience or full-time equivalent in the selected specialist area.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Recognition of prior learning of 120 credits may be awarded on completion of the relevant Curtin approved postgraduate diploma level course conducted by the hospital and or agency working in collaboration with the School of Nursing.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is three semesters full-time study or equivalent. Most units are available externally.

Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing (specific courses only) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to the approval of the Head of School. Course Organisation
Students may be required to complete the project unit during the first inter-semester break.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
