STRU-OPTOM v.1 Optometry First Year Stream (BSc HumBiol)
Major/Stream Overview
This major/stream is part of a larger course. Information is specific to the major/stream, please refer to the course for more information.
The Optometry First Year stream offers a selection of first year units to enable students to seek admission into the Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science), Master of Optometry double-degree at Flinders University.
Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details
Students enrolling in the stream will do so on the proviso that they are prepared to move to South Australia for four years to continue their course at Flinders.
Stream Entry/Completion Note
At the end of their first year, STRU-OPTO students meeting the required standard can transfer to the Flinders program. Students who have not attained the standard can remain in the HBP program or course-switch to another health science discipline as available, although they will need to pick up their MEDI1000 Foundations of Medical Science as their option in yr 2. Should there be insufficient numbers in the stream who meet the standard or who wish to continue into the Flinders program, students from higher years of the HBP course could apply for selection. Students considering this may choose the physics unit as their yr 2 option.
Major/Minor/Stream Organisation
Students who are accepted into Flinders Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science), Master of Optometry will be required to attend clinical placements in at least one of two Australian states (SA and WA). Students on placement have both an increased risk of most vaccine preventable diseases as well as the potential to transmit infections to susceptible patients, and must therefore be immunised in accordance with the relevant State or Territory immunisation standards (e.g. Health Immunisation for Health Care Workers in South Australia 2014 Policy Guideline) and any additional private provider requirements as needed. Once accepted into the Flinders program, students will also be required to complete a Criminal History Screening Check prior to undertaking any placement.
