| Syllabus: | This Unit examines and assesses the value of research within and as social work theory and practice emphasising the importance of social workers as critical consumers of research. The Unit highlights the significance of research in building social work’s evidence base. Students will be introduced to qualitative and quantitative methodologies, exploring the philosophies that inform them and assessing the knowledges constructed through them. The Unit offers students opportunities to develop skills in conceptualising a research issue, identifying an appropriate methodology, methods of data collection and approaches to analysis. In doing this students will develop critical reflexivity. Social work ethics alongside critical discourses of knowledge reproduction and representation including ‘decolonised methodologies’ will be assessed for their relevance to social work research. |
