| Syllabus: | The focus of this unit is on midwifery assessment and care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary/interprofessional team along with the mother-baby dyad. Students investigate common medical disorders impacting on the mother-baby dyad, including substance use in pregnancy, neonatal abstinence, midwifery emergencies and jaundice (pathological) of the newborn, complications of pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium. This unit seeks to develop students as effective communicators equipped with the skills for planning and delivering care to women and their families; as well as working with other health professionals. The unit has a focus on deviations from normal and emergency situations in maternity care. |
