Syllabus: A 100 hour placement with an approved not-for-profit/community organisation, offering the opportunity to contribute to a community through project work, research and/or engaging in the key activities of the organisation. The placement will be supported by pre, mid and post placement classes. A pre-placement class will provide a theoretical framework for community development and provide insights into the evolving and changing needs of communities and the role of not-for-profit organisations in community and social development. It will also introduce concepts of workplace culture, developing workplace confidence, career development planning, self-assessment, and methods for identifying and articulating employability skills for a successful placement and relevant to employer requirements. A mid-placement class will afford students the opportunity to report on their progress, identify any constraints or limitations, reflect on learning outcomes, and share experiences and stories with peers. It provides the unit coordinator the opportunity to ensure that students are meeting the requirements of the work experience placement, are engaged in active and authentic learning, and are making a valuable contribution to the organisation and community. A post-placement class provides an opportunity to reflect on their service learning experience. It is an opportunity for students to share their experience and identify how they have enhanced their understanding of community development, civic responsibility and employability skills - and how this will be communicated to employers. Toward the end of the class, workplace/community supervisors will have the opportunity to celebrate successes and achievements with the students and members of the university community.
