Syllabus: This unit provides an introduction and assumptions of continuum media, mathematical review, vector, tensor, Eigen value, matrix algebra, State of stress at a point, equilibrium equation, deviatoric stress, octahedral stress, strain at a point, Lagrangian and Eulerian transformation, deformation, compatibility equation and stress strain relationship, linear elastic, non-linear elastic. Students also learn about the elastic relation for solids using deformation, compatibility and stress equations, plasticity, yield surface, yield criteria, flow rules, Characteristics of discontinuous media and compatibility equations, Fracturing (rock fracture mechanics), Flow rules in discontinuum media and Constitutive equation for discontinuum media
