Syllabus: | Gene to Phenotype is an introductory genetic unit. It is designed to assist the scientific development of students by transmitting the excitement of genetic findings through learning opportunities with a focus on problem solving and critical thinking. The unit covers foundations in molecular genetics, inheritance, quantitative genetics and breeding, evolution, diversity and conservation genetics. It conveys practical skills in molecular biology, collection and management of genetic data and bioinformatics. The examples and research questions relate to current topics in biology, environmental management and conservation, agriculture, and biotechnology. The unit facilities the acquisition of critical reading and analytical skills, as well as organisational skills appropriate for independent and team work in a lab or field research environment. |
