Syllabus: | This unit is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of microorganisms involved in current hospital and community acquired infectious diseases, the factors contributing to their emergence and re-emergence. There is a focus on understanding the contribution of the constantly emerging anti- microbial resistance of the causative gram - positive, gram - negative aerobic, and facultative and strict anaerobes. The identification and characteristics of the causative pathogens, modes of transmission, and mechanisms of pathogenesis, infection control and preventative strategies for bacterial, viral and protozoan infections transmitted by the respiratory, faecal - oral and sexual routes; and arthropod - mediated bacterial and viral pathogens are a focus of the unit. Unique to this unit is the opportunity to gain practical knowledge of the principals underpinning the identification of select hospital-associated nosocomial pathogens in the Australian context. |
