Syllabus: | This unit covers stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. The unit encompasses four topical themes: Theme 1. Developmental Biology: Mammalian development and histogenesis, human reproductive biology and assisted reproductive technology Theme 2. Pathophysiology: target diseases for regenerative medicine; spinal cord injuries and age-related disorders, alcohol- and drug-related disorders, diabetes Theme 3. Stem Cell Biology: Embryonic stem cells, tissue-resident stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, cancer stem cells Theme 4. Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine: Technologies utilising stem cells, nuclear reprogramming of somatic cells and tissue-specific stem cells. Ethical aspects of stem cell technologies. Practical laboratory sessions will address each of the aspects listed above. |
