The taxonomy, evolutionary background, anatomy, ecology, ethology (vertebrates) and physiology of the major groups of animals are examined. The unit highlights the integration of structure and function and examines patterns of organisation from an evolutionary perspective. Specialisations and adaptations of animals to their environment will be investigated in lectures and laboratory sessions, to enable students to appreciate the wide diversity of biological mechanisms, processes and responses found in the Animal Kingdom. |
