UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: | The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline. |
Syllabus: | This unit is about advanced power system engineering and consists of three modules. The contents are mostly delivered by industry experts to educate the students with real world applications of the theories. Module 1 is on concepts of asset management including definition of asset management; modelling, condition monitoring; and asset management techniques. Module 2 is on concepts of power systems stability including steady state and transient stability; critical clearing time using equal area criterion ; stability calculations; dynamics study of system stability under network fault and disturbances; modelling of system components including automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), governors, generators, turbines, motors, loads, exciters and stabilisers. Module 3 is on concepts of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) controllers including active and reactive power compensation approaches; series and shunt compensation techniques; design and modelling of passive; and active FACTS devices. |
