Syllabus: | Two areas of emphasis are identified: a general outline of the science of ecology and developing the skills to do ecological research. Areas covered include factors affecting the distribution and abundance of species (abiotic limitations, interspecific interactions, dispersal, habitat selection and anthropogenic influences) and the functioning of communities and ecosystems. Concepts and theory will be introduced and supported by contemporary examples. Skills to conduct ecological research will be developed by conducting small research projects, following the scientific method of hypothesis testing; reviewing and interpreting scientific literature and presenting information in reports and posters. |
