UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline.
Syllabus: Extension of first-year studies of the chemistry of aromatics, alky halides, alcohols ethers and epoxides, amines, carboxylic acids and aldehydes and ketones. An examination of carbanion reactions of cabonyl compounds and the chemistry of polyfunctional aliphatic compounds such as dicarboxylic acids, keto-acids and hydroxyl-acids. Synthesis of coordination complexes, ligand design, template synthesis. An introduction to organometallic chemistry; bonding, ligands. Laboratory experiments in preparative reactions illustrating techniques and reaction types.
