MJRP-MIDWF v.1 Midwifery Major (MSc Clinical)


Major/Stream Overview

This major builds on undergraduate preparation and the extensive clinical midwifery expertise of the student. It enhances the professional development of the expert midwife practitioner through the investigation of varied theoretical perspectives pertinent to midwifery issues. Recognising and building on extensive midwifery practice prepares students as scholars, leaders and change agents within midwifery.



Major/Stream Entry and Completion Details

Applicants must be eligible for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), possess a Bachelor or Graduate Diploma in Midwifery with a high course weighted average (greater than 70 percent) and have a minimum of 12 months of midwifery practice.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Specifically for this major, applicants who are eligible for registrations as a midwife with the NMBA, have a hospital based certificate as a midwife, recent midwifery practice and demonstrated attainment of professional standards may be eligible for credit for recognised learning. A professional portfolio demonstrating attainment of professional standards must be submitted.


Major Entry/Completion Note

This major is not available to international students studying in Australia on a study visa. Students progressing to the Master of Midwifery from the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery will complete a specified core unit (Clinical Operational Management) rather than an option unit.



Major/Minor/Stream Organisation

This major aims to enhance the professional development of expert midwives. Students will investigate varied theoretical perspectives pertinent to midwifery issues. This major will build on the students’ initial midwifery qualifications and their clinical midwifery expertise to prepare them as a scholar, leader and agent for change within midwifery. Students will synthesis knowledge, skills and research findings from the humanities, biological and behavioural sciences into evidence-based practice.


Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply discipline knowledge, principles and concepts in accordance with relevant midwifery and other health practice codes, standards and legislation

2. access and critically analyse issues to support advances in midwifery practice and generate innovative solutions

3. extract, interpret and evaluate relevant evidence and scientific literature to inform decision making and optimise outcomes for childbearing women and their families in midwifery settings

4. communicate effectively and engage collaboratively with childbearing women and their families, and the interprofessional health care team; and promote midwifery within the community in the context of public health care policy

5. utilise technology safely and manage information ethically and effectively

6. participate in research and critically appraise research findings and incorporate evidence based knowledge into midwifery practice

7. recognise the importance of skilled midwifery care for childbearing women and babies in an international context and incorporate relevant international evidence/recommendations into midwifery practice

8. incorporate and support culturally safe, non-discriminatory midwifery care for childbearing women, their babies, families and communities; foster understanding of the influences and impacts of diversity, values, beliefs and socio-cultural differences on the health of women and babies

9. demonstrate professional, legal and ethical accountability within the scope of practice midwifery
