Course Overview

Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.


Students are required to complete a total of twelve units. Students will be exploring topics in the areas of financial accounting, managerial accounting, governance and auditing. Students may choose between an advanced taxation unit or an international finance unit in the final semester. The course is also designed to provide tuition support for students that wish to undertake the CPA Program.

Graduates generally find employment with organisations, both in the private and public sectors, and accounting firms.


Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials.



Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.


Specifically, this degree is available to applicants who have an Australian recognized bachelor degree majoring in accounting. Selection is competitive. In addition, you must meet Curtin's English competency standards.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation

Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.


Students will explore topics in the areas of financial accounting, managerial accounting, governance and auditing. Students may choose between an advanced taxation unit or an international finance unit in the final semester. The course is also designed to provide tuition support for students that wish to undertake the CPA Program.


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. Apply principles of financial accounting, managerial accounting, governance and auditing to grasp theoretical underpinnings of the discipline.Extend knowledge base with original research and application of business research methods.

2. Apply critical and analytical thinking to develop innovative solutions to complex problems in relevant business fields

3. Locate, extract and critically appraise decision useful information related to relevant topics from sources within an organisation and from external sources

4. Use of effectively structured financial or other appropriate language to communicate for a range of purposes to a professional audience.

5. Use and evaluate electronic resources to effectively interrogate databases, analyse data, collect information and present it in a professional manner.

6. Develop ongoing professional, self-directed and reflective education relating to developments and changes in the industry.

7. Recognise the global and multi perspective nature of accounting and related disciplines; applying international financial reporting standards and appreciate the information requirements of a global financial system.

8. Recognise that cultural practices and differences impact upon commercial endeavours and interpersonal relations.

9. Exhibit professional and ethical approach to analysing and reporting commercial activities; demonstrate leadership, collaborative and independent qualities when required.

This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.
