Course Overview
Master Degrees (Research) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for research, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This research course aims to develop, through the conduct of a supervised research project, the ability of a suitably qualified candidate to contribute to the knowledge and practice of engineering. At the completion of the assigned project, the candidate submits a written thesis presenting the results of the work and discussing the significance of them for the pertinent field of engineering.

Course Overview Note
It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive a related Graduate Diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Research) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://research.curtin.edu.au/guides. Applicants require a Bachelor Degree with a strong academic performance and may also require relevant substantial work experience or Bachelor Honours Degree (first or second class) or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require a recognised bachelor of engineering degree at honours level. Other applications will be considered from other well-qualified graduates able to present acceptable evidence of an ability to undertake research projects. In such cases, admission may be subject to successful completion of a prescribed qualifying program.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Research) require students to undertake an approved research program leading to a thesis for independent examination; they may include advanced level coursework studies.
The topic for the research project is assigned to the candidate after consultation with the Head of Department. Students are admitted subject to successful completion of a qualifying program. Students enrol in one or both of the Master Qualifying Program units and undertake a specified program of study. On successful completion, students qualify to proceed with the formal master program. Failure to attain a satisfactory standard in the qualifying units renders a student ineligible for re-enrolment in the master course.

This course is by research and normally requires one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
