| Syllabus: | The unit will begin with a definition, classification and significance of materials degradation. Focus will be placed on fatigue, wear and corrosion. This introduction will be followed by mechanisms of fatigue and fatigue analysis with an emphasis on welded components. Next part will cover mechanisms of abrasive, erosive, adhesive and fatigue wear along with how to recognise them and real engineering applications. Fundamentals of corrosion in liquids will be introduced, in particular, uniform vs. localised corrosion, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion and selective leaching. Environmental cracking will be discussed with an emphasis on stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement. Various forms of tribocorrosion will be investigated using real industry examples of erosion-corrosion in pipelines (especially bends), abrasion-corrosion in slurry pumps and fretting-corrosion in biomedical implants. Hot corrosion and high temperature oxidation will also be investigated. The unit will cover tribotesting and methods for mitigating wear and/or corrosion with an emphasis on selecting materials and using coatings and surface treatments. |
