| Syllabus: | This unit covers the processing steps in the conversion of crude oil into refinery products: the overall process and details of the individual operations; alternate process technologies and considerations involved in design work; and the key issues and phenomena encountered. There are two sections—Field Processing and Refinery Processing. In Field Processing, students learn about crude oil formation, drilling and production; two-phase and three-phase separation, dehydration, desalting, stabilization and sweetening; and crude oil storage and transportation. Refinery Processing deals with the importance of crude oil, its types, composition, refinery products and product test methods; crude oil evaluation; refinery configurations: different refinery flowsheets, the function of each operation and their integration; distillation: atmospheric and vacuum; refinery gas processing; reforming and cracking; heavy end processing: thermal cracking, hydrocracking, visbreaking and coking; lube oil refining; instrumentation and control; safety and environmental systems; and refinery logistics and economics. |
