| Syllabus: | This unit aims to provide knowledge of the structure, function and development of systems of a normal human body at all levels of organisation, from molecular and cellular to organ systems and the total individual, and the changes that occur as a result of disease, injury and abnormal development. The systems covered in this unit will include cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and reproductive systems. The major focus is on the foundations of biomedical science. Students will locate, critically appraise, interpret and apply biomedical information in clinical contexts. Students will also learn how to communicate with patients, some basic clinical procedures, and how to conduct physical examinations in clinical practice. The unit also includes patterns of behaviour through the human life cycle and draws on aspects of the physical and social environment, and behaviour at individual and group levels affecting the incidence of, and response to disease in the community. This unit also develops knowledge and understanding of concepts that underpin socially responsible health professional practice and public health, and will include developing deeper understandings about ethics, law, and professionalism, in relation to medicine. |
