Course Overview
Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
Curtin’s Master of Innovation and Commercialisation (MIC) is a 1.5 year, 300-credit course that provides learners with the knowledge and skills to originate and develop ideas and identify novel opportunities, and to bring these to life in ways that customers, organisations and communities value. The MIC leverages Curtin Graduate School of Business' (CGSB) strengths in strategy, finance, leadership and organisational development and integrates multidisciplinary capacities involving humanities, health, sciences and engineering, as well as the Curtin Intellectual Property (IP) and Commercialisation area. The MIC embeds design thinking, intellectual property, technology innovation and product development through an immersive Innovation Project that runs longitudinally through the course and through the units offered by the four Faculty areas. In this way, the MIC harnesses strengths across Curtin’s Faculties in recognition that innovation and pathways to commercialisation emerge across all academic disciplines and form learners of all ages, backgrounds and interests. MIC learners choose units that deepen their abilities with technology, process, and service innovation. In this way, MIC serves learners pursuing private sector new ventures, government, non-profit and the social entrepreneurship that blurs the conventional lines between governmental, private and social sectors. The MIC also offers learners the ability to develop their own novel ideas or to collaborate to develop Curtin IP that might not otherwise be accessible to many learners. The MIC’s foundation is built on CGSB MBA units, which are complemented by selected units drawn from all Curtin faculties and the Curtin Law School in a uniquely multidisciplinary program.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Specifically, applicants require an undergraduate degree and will undergo an interview to explore their professional interests and passions, commitment to innovation, understanding of innovation and commercialisation, and suitability for specific cohorts. MIC students require an IELTS of 6.5 overall (with no less than 6 in all bands).
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Organisation
Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
MIC learners will undertake 100-credit points in Foundation Units, 50-credit points in Compulsory Core units, 75-credit points in Optional units, a 50-credit point Innovation Project and a 25-credit point Research Project.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. gain broad exposure to concepts, theories, principles and problems associated with innovation and commercialisation. This discipline knowledge is applied through development of novel ideas, innovations and industry-based practical activities.
2. think critically, creatively and reflexively to develop innovation/commercialisation opportunities, and adapt understanding based on research, feedback and their own growing understanding of the opportunities they pursue through MIC.
3. develop research capabilities, and must access, evaluate, synthesise and use information to support decision making through discipline-specific models, tools and techniques.
4. communicate effectively through a range of media, including business plans, group work, and presentations to classmates and industry.
5. use proven technologies and are exposed to a range of emerging technologies that support innovation and commercialisation. Students also explore development of new technologies.
6. gain expertise in using research, presentation, management and self-leadership skills that translate beyond the immediate requirements of innovation and commercialisation.
7. develop an understanding of innovation, commercialisation, leadership and philosophical topics in international and multi-cultural contexts. This contextual learning includes international perspectives on leadership, markets, developing teams, law and regulation, and product development.
8. demonstrate intercultural awareness and understanding throughout MIC through collaborative, team-based learning, and insights drawn from discipline-specific content and assessments.
9. evelop, practice and demonstrate diverse professional and leadership skills in the context of innovation and commercialisation.
Duration and Availability
This course is one and a half years full time or equivalent part-time study, undertaken over four trimesters.
