Syllabus: | Planetary Science 101 will provide students with a sound understanding of the major bodies of the Solar System, including the Earth’s moon and the planets, as well as asteroids, comets and dwarf planets. Students will examine the impact of spacecraft exploration on the historical development of our knowledge and understanding of planetary science. Space craft design and technological advances will be related to the quantity and quality of data obtained and how these data have allowed the development of theories of the formation, evolution, structure and future of the Solar System. Students will use information technology communication skills to analyse the importance of knowledge obtained by Solar System exploration in terms of the ultimate benefits to society, despite the risks and cost. As the weather and planetary locations allow, students will have the opportunity to see the planets first hand through a high quality telescope. |
