Syllabus: Underground geotechnical - factors affecting excavation behaviour. Stresses around mining excavations. Computational theory and methods for rock behaviour and stress analysis. Failure mechanisms. Rock mass characterisation systems. Mine seismicity and related dynamic, high stress events. Ground support systems for high stress environments. Geotechnical aspects of blast design and effects. Stress relief and yield pillar systems. Subsidence above mine excavations. Surface geotechnical - review of collection and analysis of data for surface mining geotechnical engineering. Review of strength and deformation behaviour of defects ad rock masses. Limit equilibrium analysis of slope stability. Probabilistic analysis of slope stability. Numerical analysis of slope stability. Design and optimisation of slopes in open pit mines. Construction of slopes in open pit mines. Ground and surface water management in or on pit slopes. Slope monitoring methods, analysis and interpretation. Tailings dam design and construction. Waste dump design and construction. Geotechnical aspects of haul road design and construction. Other topical surface mining geotechnical engineering issues. Regulatory framework.
