Course Overview

Master degrees (coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.


This course is designed for those seeking to develop an understanding of creative practice in the current environment. Students develop critical and analytical understandings, as well as practical and professional skills orientated towards a career in one of four main disciplines, in a combination of those disciplines, or a related area such as performance art or education. Students also gain generic skills that are valuable in a range of situations, including leadership, problem-solving and working collaboratively in a team. Participants are encouraged to apply and test these skills and understandings through applied practice in the form of a professionally-orientated creative project.


Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials. Students may incur a cost for personal Internet access.



Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a bachelor degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma.


Specifically, applicants require an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than creative writing, performance studies or screen production.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:


Graduate Diploma in Creative Practice.

Course Organisation

Master degrees (coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. explain critical theories relating to production and creative practice in key disciplines and apply them to the development and realisation of high quality creative projects

2. apply critical thinking and creative approaches to resolve issues and respond to challenges in their own creative practice

3. access, evaluate and synthesise appropriate information in order to realise outcomes in one or more fields of creative production

4. communicate ideas to other practitioners and audiences across a variety of disciplines, media and purposes

5. utilise specific technologies relevant to one or more fields of creative practice and apply them effectively in the development and execution of original works

6. apply learning strategies to build on skills and understandings in order to adapt to continually changing community and industry needs

7. recognise the significance of global production, distribution and publication and be able to apply international standards and understandings in their creative practice

8. value the cultural and intercultural nature of creative practice across a range of disciplines and represent this knowledge at a personal and professional level

9. demonstrate professional behaviour and standards and work collaboratively to apply them in all aspects of creative practice and production-related activities
