3 Years
The Bachelor of Arts (Languages and Asian Cultures) provides students with the skills necessary to enter professions requiring communication with peoples of different cultures and languages. Graduates of this degree and associated double degrees possess functional knowledge of at least one Asian language and culture. The course offers a choice of majors in Chinese (Mandarin), Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Asian Studies. Students are strongly encouraged to utilise the numerous exchange agreements and study abroad programs offered by Curtin University. The flexible nature of the course allows students to prepare a program of study suitable to individual academic interests and professional vocational needs, including units from other faculties in the University. In recent years graduates have had no difficulty in finding employment in a wide variety of professions, both in Australia and Asia. Graduates of this course may be invited to enrol in an honours year, and may eventually be considered for admission to a graduate course.
No previous study of any of the languages is required. Preference will be given to applicants with a TEE LOTE subject, and also applicants with other evidence of formal language studies. Students who have studied their language major prior to entry will take more advanced classes. Part of the course may be studied abroad at one of Curtin's exchange universities in Asia, particularly in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
3 years' full-time study or equivalent part-time.
Students select either one or two of the following majors - Chinese (Mandarin), Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, TESOL or Asian Studies. Where a student opts for two majors and both majors have the same core unit, the core unit for one of the majors should be replaced by an option unit. If a student opts to complete only one major the remainder of the course consists of options and elective units.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
