The making of Australian society-a socioeconomic history of Australia and interaction with white settlers, motives for European settlement of Australia, main phases of subsequent European migration, convictism and its impact on national character and economic growth, the development of capitalist classes and the impact of gold, tariffs and free selection, exploration in the Australian national tradition, women in 19th century Australian society. The search for heroes, dissent and violence in 19th century, plus a major research paper.
