Principles of mass spectrometer operation. Ion optics, ion sources, mass dispersion, detectors. Automation. Measurement of isotopic abundance. Isotope dilution. Modern mass spectrometers including TIMS and SHRIMP. Atomic weights and measurement science. A selection of modern topics including stable isotopes and health, nuclear waster storage and fossil reactors, isotopic tracers for pollution history and environmental science, radiometric dating of the earth, nucleosynthesis and the abundance of the element. Data analysis and laboratory work. |
