Structural Materials. Concrete - Cements and aggregates, grading of aggregates. Concrete quality control, strength and workability. Placing and curing concrete. Concrete mix design.Timber - Structural properties of timber, defects, insect attack, seasoning and preservation. Glue laminated timbers, plywoods, connectors. Steel - Properties of different types of steels including stress-strain curves, definition of yield and ultimate stresses. Influence of different alloys. Mechanics of Solids - Shear stresses in beams. Shear in thin walled sections, shear centre, unsymmetrical bending. Torsion of circular bars, rectangular bars, thin walled sections. Stress and strain at a point. Mohr's circle of stress and strain. Elastic constants. Combined stresses. Theories of failure. Thick and thin walled cylinders.
