Using problem-based learning methods, this unit covers the relevant practical skills necessary to design, construct, program, test and fully describe a computer controlled machine that must satisfy specific performance objectives. Lecture topics include: conceptual designa dn visualisation, mechanical construction, power supply design, optoisolation, microcontroller programming and chip downloading, sensor interfacing and calibration, 'master-slave' communications between networked computers, protocol programming, hardware and software debugging, experimentation, performance testing, report writing and design documentation.
