Introduction to biocatalysis and bioenergetics, biological oxidation and reduction. Enzymes, enzyme kinetics and inhibition of enzyme action. Implications for drug metabolism. Basic biochemistry and metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Cholesterol, hypercholestrolaemia and serum lipoproteins. Biochemical control. Nucleotide metabolism. DNA and the gene. Cellular biochemistry of calcium and other ions. Biochemical principles in drug action. Insulin. digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Nutrition - daily energy intake and expenditure. Energetic content of food types. Biochemistry of vitamins and trace elements and antioxidant vitamins. |
