Using problem-based learning methods, this unit introduces the topics of modelling and experimentation in the context of a 'real' mechatronic machine. Specific knowledge and skills developed include: introduction to the general concepts and methods of modelling, experiment design to verify theoretical steady-state models, torque-speed characteristics of a dc motor, application of systems principles, application of Newton's Laws to dynamic systems, frictional forces, efficiency calculations. Technical andexperimental report writing, oral presentations.
