BSc(Curtin)

Introduction

Molecular genetics is an exciting and rapidly developing area of science. It provides an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of many human, animal and plant diseases. New drugs and vaccines, and improved varieties of plants and animals are being produced using genetic engineering technology. Molecular genetics will have an increasing impact on most areas of biology and medicine over the coming years.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

None. Chemistry, Applicable Mathematics and Human Biology or Biology desirable. Contact the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Specific Requirements

The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

The first year of the degree is common to the Medical Science and Human Biology courses offered in the School. During the second semester of the third year students are required to undertake a research project.

Career Opportunities

This course provides career opportunities in government laboratories, academic and research centres, or in the biotechnology, biomedical, agricultural and pharmaceutical industries.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
