Introduction
This course is designed to meet the needs of the working nurse who is required to contribute to reducing the harm associated with alcohol and other drug use. It provides advanced nursing theory and guides nursing practice in this specialised area. It is a collaborative program between the Western Australian Alcohol and Drug Authority and the School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A currently Registered Nurse or eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, with a bachelors degree in nursing or equivalent or a degree in a related discipline, if qualification is in a related discipline, the applicant may be required to undertake selected units prior to commencement of the course, have 12 months post-registration clinical experience, provide a satisfactory academic record and provide evidence of appropriate communication and interpersonal skills.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Students who have successfully completed the Chemical Dependency Certificate course undertaken at the Western Australian Alcohol and Drug Authority will receive recognition of prior learning or exemption for the unit Nursing 521 - Substance Misuse.
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is of one year full-time duration or equivalent part-time. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for those studying part-time.
Course Organisation
The Chemical Dependency Certificate course component undertaken at the Western Australian Alcohol and Drug Authority, forms part of this course as Nursing 521 - Substance Misuse.
