301585 v.2 Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing (Paediatrics)

Introduction

This course provides a broad research foundation to enable scholarly research advancing nursing theory with the capacity to guide practice. It is a collaborative program between Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH) and the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A currently Registered Nurse or eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, with a nursing degree or equivalent and a minimum of 18 months post-registration clinical experience with a minimum of six months continuous practice in an acute care setting, be accepted by Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Selection is based on academic performance, appropriate communication and interpersonal skills and high standards of nursing. Experience in paediatric nursing is desirable but not essential for placement in general areas. Experience in paediatric nursing or experience in chosen specialty is essential for initial placement in specialty areas. Applicants with a degree from an appropriate discipline, where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient, are required to undertake selected units prior to commencing the course. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is also a course prerequisite.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Applicants who have successfully completed the hospital based component will receive recognition of prior learning for Paediatric Nursing 551.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of one year full-time duration or equivalent part-time. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for those studying part-time.

Course Organisation

Students complete the advanced nursing practice component of this course within an approved hospital and or agency course.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
