314640 v.1 Mining Sciences Pre-major (BSc Science)

Introduction

The pre-major introduces and provides student pathways to various majors that lead to rewarding careers in the mining industry such as mine and engineering surveyors, mining specialists, and extractive metallurgists. Mining science covers all aspects related to planning and supervision of extracting valuable minerals from the earth. With ever-increasing minerals demand, mining specialists in 21st century are expected to play a key role in planning and management of the most economical, safest, and environmentally regulated mining operations. Mine and engineering surveying involves accurate three-dimensional positioning and measurement of all open-pit, underground and civil engineering works. Extractive metallurgy deals with the extraction and purification of metals and minerals products. Owing to the increasing need to process low grade and complex ores, the role of extractive metallurgist is increasingly the most critical to the success of a mining operation.
