Introduction

This course has been developed to provide graduates with the opportunity to continue their professional development as a lifelong learner. Students are provided with advanced theoretical knowledge, contemporary clinical practice and clinical research opportunities.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A four year Bachelor degree from a recognised tertiary institution, or three year Bachelor or Diploma degree from a recognised tertiary institution plus a minimum of 12 months relevant clinical experience. Applicants must either be registered phsyiotherapists, or eligible for temporary registration, in Western Australia.

Specific Requirements

From October 2010 it is anticipated that students will be required to register with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia if they undertake a unit involving clinical practice. Evidence of successful completion of an approved course in (CPR) first aid is required before an award is granted. Prospective applicants are advised that the program requires full participation in laboratory classes where practical skills and topics are presented. Essential learning strategies demand that all students disrobe appropriately to act as subjects for their peer group.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is two semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study. Some units within the course are offered externally.

Intermediate Awards 1

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Graduate Certificate in Clinical Physiotherapy; Graduate Certificate in Clinical Physiotherapy (Continence and Womens Health); Graduate Certificate in Clinical Physiotherapy (Manipulative Therpay).

Course Organisation

This is a dynamic course, based on contemporary best practice. It provides an opportunity for physiotherapists to develop their standard of practice both academically and clinically. The course focuses on integration of biomedical evidence and current concepts in clinical practice relevant to physiotherapy. Development of advanced clinical reasoning, diagnostic and treatment skills are promoted through interactive teaching, and supervised clinical practice. During this course, students undertake supervised research or project work relevant to their area of practice. Professionalism, clinical leadership and excellence in patient management are expected graduate attributes. Students can major in manipulative therapy, continence and women’s health, clinical physiotherapy or sports physiotherapy.
