Introduction

This course builds on undergraduate preparation, recognising prior learning, and the extensive clinical midwifery expertise of the student. It enhances the professional development of the expert midwife practitioner through the investigation of varied theoretical perspectives pertinent to midwifery issues. Recognising and building on extensive midwifery practice prepares students as scholars, leaders and change agents within midwifery.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Eligibility for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery or equivalent and recent midwifery practice. Those meeting these requirements may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to the third semester of the course. Applicants who are eligible for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), a hospital based certificate in midwifery, and recent midwifery practice, may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to the second semester of the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. To support this application students are required to submit a professional portfolio detailing evidence of accomplishments.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is three semesters' full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

This course aims to enhance the professional development of expert midwives. Students will investigate varied theoretical perspectives pertinent to midwifery issues. This course will build on the students’ initial midwifery qualification and their clinical midwifery expertise to prepare them as a scholar, leader and agent for change within midwifery. Studies will synthesise knowledge, skills and research findings from the humanities, biological and behavioural sciences into evidence-based practice.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion, students will be able to expand their provision of expert midwifery clinical care to childbearing women from differing cultural backgrounds and their families.
