311148 v.3 Bachelor of Science (Science)

Course CRICOS Code: 061600D
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 3 Years

Introduction

This course provides students with an opportunity to pursue their interest in science by choosing a single major or a combination of two majors in the following areas of study: chemistry, applied mathematics and statistics, and physics. Students may alsochoose from two additional double majors; Mathematical Sciences and Computing or Mathematical Sciences and Finance. Students may also choose the Multidisciplinary Science major which has been specifically designed for students with interests across a broad range of science areas. Graduates emerge with a comprehensive foundation in their chosen area of science and are prepared for a range of employment opportunities in the scientific field. Those that excel are well prepared to further their knowledge through our honours and research programs.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Students wishing to enrol in any of the above majors except Multidisciplinary Science must have passed TEE Applicable Mathematics and the chosen core major/s subject/s at TEE level. A pass in TEE Calculus is desirable. Students wishing to enrol in the Multidisciplinary Science major must have passed one TEE Mathematics subject and one TEE Science subject. Please see the course coordinator for any further information.

Specific Requirements

The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course except for the Multidisciplinary Science major. Students should contact the course coordinator for further information regarding this major.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This course is of three years duration full-time or the equivalent part-time study. Two intakes are offered each year, in February and July. Prospective students should note that places may not always be available for the mid-year intake.

Course Organisation

In the first year students must choose at least one of the following pre-majors: 312503 Chemistry http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312503.html 312511 Applied Mathematics and Statistics http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312511.html 312548 Physics http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312505.html 312548Multidisciplinary Science http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312548.html 312549 Mathematical Sciences and Computing http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312549.html 312550 Mathematical Sciences and Finance http://www.handbook.curtin.edu.au/courses/31/312550.html Students will progress to the relevant major/s in second year depending on their first year choice/s. Students may need to meet the requirements of two pre-majors if wishing to complete a double major in two of the areas chemistry, applied mathematics and statistics, and physics. Students who choose to complete a single major in a discipline area e.g. Chemistry, must complete the extended stream in that area.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of this course may be eligible for membership in the relevant society or institute of their chosen area of study. Further details can be obtained from the course coordinator.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
