Course Overview

This course is designed to provide foundation studies for students intending to undertake bachelor degrees in the Faculties of Science and Engineering and Health Sciences. It is particularly suitable for those who have not had an opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills in sciences and mathematics. Although the course is designed to enable students with limited school educational backgrounds to succeed, there is a distinct advantage in having studied maths and some sciences up to Year 11 or higher. Students with only a Year 10 High School background or less (who possibly also studied many years ago) would be advised to spend a semester or two taking some preparatory units of study at Canning or Tuart College. Counsellors at these Colleges would be best placed to advise you in this regard. Successful completion of the course will satisfy the University's eligibility requirements and students will be eligible to apply for admission to Courses within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences as outlined in the Course Completion Information.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants who have had limited educational opportunity are encouraged to apply. Selection is based on an assessment of previous educational background and a personal statement which may include information on any community involvement and other achievements. An interview may also be required. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds may be directed to English Language Bridging courses.

Course Entry/Completion Note

For entry into Pharmacy or Physiotherapy students must pass 200 credits with a CWA ≥ 75%. For entry into all Engineering courses, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy or Medical Imaging Science students must pass 200 credits with a CWA ≥ 65%. For entry into all other Science and Health Science courses students must pass 150 credits with a CWA ≥ 50% (assumes any specific course prerequisites are met).

Course Organisation

A study program is determined by the Undergraduate Coordinator following an interview and an assessment of career pathways by the student. Depending on units undertaken, this may not be a standard full-time load.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply the first principles of science and engineering to a range of theoretical and practical situations; perform straightforward scientific investigations

2. apply critical thinking, process skills, and the scientific method to generate solutions to problems.

3. access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from a range of sources, using relevant technologies

4. effectively communicate discipline specific information to peers and other audiences for a range of purposes

5. safely and competently use a range of technologies which are appropriate to scientific, engineering and health related professions, while recognising their advantages and limitations

6. evaluate their own learning and development as a student, and develop strategies to take control of their own learning and development; identify the need for on-going learning as a graduate

7. recognise and apply international standards within their discipline; recognise the significance of considering science, health and engineering issues from a global and international perspective

8. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity, and consider the health, science and engineering disciplines in the context of human rights and social justice

9. work ethically and professionally both within a team and independently
