Course Overview

Bachelor double degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in more than one discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.


Civil Engineering involves the application of basic scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of facilities infrastructure for the welfare of the community. It is concerned with such projects as railways, harbours and docks, road systems, bridges, water supply and wastewater treatment, dams, tunnels and underground construction, power projects, offshore structures and commercial and industrial buildings. Many engineering projects require a close working relationship with other groups - other types of engineers, planners, architects and environmental scientists. More detailed knowledge of mining engineering will allow Civil graduates to gain a qualification that extends their expertise into the mining field and allow them to work in the mining industry.


Professional Recognition

The civil engineering components of this course have been accorded full recognition by Engineers Australia and exempt graduates from all academic requirements for corporate membership of Engineers Australia. To qualify for corporate membership of Engineers Australia a graduate also requires a minimum of four years approved experience following the award of the Bachelor of Engineering degree. This course includes units recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and some overseas institutions. Graduates, after a set period of time in industry, can apply to the Department of Minerals and Energy Western Australia, for a certificate as a manger of open cast mines.


Career Opportunities

Demand for civil and construction engineers remains strong. Employment for graduates is mainly with federal, state or municipal authorities, consulting engineers, large contractors and/or specialist subcontractors. Many graduates find work interstate or overseas.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways.


Specifically applicants require TEE Applicable Mathematics and at least two out of TEE Calculus/Physics/Chemistry. OR at least three of the following four: Mathematics 3c/3D, Mathematics Specialist 3C/3D, Physics 3A/3B and Chemistry 3A/3B. Engineering Studies 3A/3B desirable. Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake an additional program of preparatory studies. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Pathway to Further Study

Graduates with a bachelor degree may qualify for entry to some graduate certificates, graduate diplomas and master by coursework degrees. Graduates with a bachelor degree with honours may also qualify for entry to a master or doctorate by research. For further details, see the University website http://curtin.edu.au.


Specific Course Completion Details

To satisfy professional requirements, students must complete at least twelve weeks of approved work experience associated with engineering in industry before completion of course studies. Students may make their own arrangements for employment or seek the assistance of Careers and prospective student service. Students are strongly urged to consider twelve weeks a minimum and to undertake as much additional work experience as they can. Students are required to submit a report covering the work carried out. Further details regarding the work/ report required are available from the Department of Civil Engineering; A current certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before a degree will be awarded;



Course Organisation

Bachelor double degrees include a combined degree study program leading to two awards. The duration of the double degree may vary among disciplines, but typically requires less time to complete than if the two undergraduate degrees were studied separately.


The course develops skills and understanding in the fundamental aspects of engineering, specifically in the areas of structures, soils, water and construction, which provides the engineer with excellent skills and understanding of civil engineering and construction technology. The first two years are spent acquiring and developing basic knowledge and skills required for later use in design and construction. Scientific and mathematical topics are important, as are the fundamentals of materials behaviour, stress analysis and engineering drawing computing. Later civil studies take on more advanced study of structural analysis and design, materials, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering and hydraulics, construction management for large civil engineering projects, construction control, industrial relations, contract law, cost estimation and finance. A final year project is also undertaken. The BEng (Civil and Construction Engineering) component of the course can be awarded with honours to outstanding candidates. Mining engineering subjects include aspects of surface and underground mining, materials handling and mining methods. These build on and compliment earlier civil engineering studies.


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. integrate knowledge from all Civil and Construction Engineering sub-disciplines to design and construct civil engineering works

2. integrate learning with client requirements to produce feasible practical, sustainable solutions

3. acquire and evaluate information to facilitate design and construction of civil engineering works

4. communicate effectively with plans and reports to all stakeholders

5. identify and use suitable technologies to complete civil engineering works successfully

6. continually extend and build on professional understanding and skills acquired during the undergraduate learning

7. practice civil engineering with a global perspective and appropriate international standards

8. recognize the impact of cultural and environmental diversity in implementation civil engineering works

9. demonstrate leadership professional behaviour and ethical practice in the context of civil engineering projects
