Course Overview

Bachelor honours degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications. The honours component prepares students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional work, research and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

Occupational therapy is a profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do the things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying their environment to better support participation. Occupational therapists have a broad education that equips them with skills and knowledge to work collaboratively with individuals or groups of people (and their communities) who have an impairment of body structure or function due to a health condition, and who experience barriers to participation. Occupational therapists believe that participation can be supported or restricted by physical, social, attitudinal and legislative environments. Therefore, occupational therapy practice may be directed to changing aspects of the environment to enhance participation.

Professional Recognition

Graduates using the title registered health practitioner or the title of occupational therapist must be registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the National Board). Graduates can also choose to be a member of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or Occupational Therapy Australia (WA). The course is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

You may be employed in a health, community or industry setting including urban and rural community-based programs, private practice, medical and vocational rehabilitation units, psychiatric services, mining and resource industries, and schools. Opportunities for work exist throughout Australia and internationally through recognition of our degree through accreditation with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways. Admission to the Honours stream is by invitation and follows high achievement within this bachelor degree.

Prerequisites: A least one science course 3A/3B from the following list: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Human Biological Science, Integrated Science or Physics. Applicants must also meet the University’s standard entry requirements, which include English competency. STAT is not accepted for entry to this course. Selection is based on the tertiary entrance rank for Year 12 students. Other criteria apply for non-school leaver applicants. Part-time students are not accepted.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Entry/Completion Note

Applicants for this course should refer to the Clinical Health Sciences and Police Clearances sections of the faculty website. Students are required to have a current First Aid Certificate within four weeks of entry into the first year of the course.

Course Organisation

Embedded bachelor honours degrees typically comprise an honours stream equivalent to one year of full-time study undertaken during the last year (or two) of study.

Clinical practice throughout the course is undertaken in a number of hospitals and allied institutions with the cooperation of the relevant specialist and administrative staff.

Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply occupational therapy knowledge, principles and practice to achieve client-centred and evidence-based outcomes

2. demonstrate critical and professional reasoning to generate innovative and effective solutions for occupational therapy practice

3. locate, evaluate and synthesis information and contextualise it to contemporary occupational therapy

4. communicate effectively and appropriately to ensure active client participation; relevant documentation and reporting; and responsible sharing of professional information

5. evaluate and incorporate appropriate technologies to enable participation in meaningful occupation

6. aspire to participate in life-long and professional development activities to maintain, enhance and promote occupational therapy

7. demonstrate practice that reflects an understanding and appreciation of the influences and relationships between local and global occupational therapy professional standards and practice

8. practice occupational therapy in a culturally appropriate and respectful manner incorporating perspectives of multiple stake-holders

9. work in a professional and collaborative manner to meet ethical and legal responsibilities

Duration and Availability

This course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Part-time study is only available under exceptional circumstances. Fieldwork placement activities occur during the entire final year of the course and, in particular, one fieldwork block may continue beyond the end of the final semester of the course.
