Syllabus: This unit examines Australian energy markets and their regulation, focusing on gas and electricity markets in particular. This examination is conducted within a broader international context where concerns about energy security, diminishing resources, and environmental concerns provide a complex policy environment within which to conduct business. Particular topics discussed within that framework include the constitutional basis for and historical development of Australian energy law, the regulatory mechanisms for the Australian gas and electricity production, transmission, distribution and retail markets, the structure of those markets, and key regulators including the Australian Energy Regulator. Relevant issues of corporate social responsibility are also discussed.
