Syllabus: Structural and molecular organisation of the cell, protein structure and function including haemoglobin, collagen proteins and enzymes, membrane structure and function, basic concepts and design in metabolism, carbohydrate structure, function and metabolism. Fermentation of non-digested carbohydrates. Laboratory safety. An introduction to basic biochemical laboratory procedures including experiments with buffers, carbohydrates, protein, amino acids and enzymes. Use of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
