Syllabus: An introduction to natural products. Biological significance of naturally occurring compounds including terpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, and cannabinoids. Biologically active natural products from indigenous flora and fauna. An introduction to medicinal chemistry: Intermolecular forces in drug binding, drug targets, drug discovery, common sources of lead compounds, identifying possible drug candidates, biological screening processes. Drug design, optimising target interactions and target access. Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). Selected topics in medicinal chemistry including antibacterial and antiviral drugs.
