Syllabus: Structural Component: Stress Analysis, Mohr diagrams and brittle failure, Fault initiation and development, fault system evolution, stereographic projection techniques in structural geology, strain analysis, kinematic analysis of shear zones, superimposed deformation, kinematic fold mechanism models, microstructural deformation, processes and mechanisms, crystallographic fabrics, rheology, creep of geological materials, deformation histories ;Minerology and Geochemistry Component : Understanding of the basic principles governing the nature of crystalline solids. Knowledge of the essential physical and chemical characteristics of all the major classes of rock-forming silicate minerals. Understanding of the origins of solid solution, exsolution, polymorphism and twinning. Practice in the presentation of geochemical data, including the use of triangular diagrams. geochemical classification and distribution of the elements. The Solar System, meteorites and Earth differentiation. Chemistry of the solid Earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.
