Introduction
This course provides students with broad based knowledge and practical skills in the ever expanding field of health, safety and environment. In first year students are introduced to the field as well as completing foundation science and communication units. In second year students have the opportunity to select a major in either environmental health or health and safety. Additionally, students in both majors undertake professional practice training in workplaces ranging from government agencies through to industrial settings.
Course Entry Requirements/Requisites
Prerequisites: . No prior study in a particular subject is required. Applicants must meet the University’s standard entry requirements, which include English competency. Desirable: At least Mathematics 2C/2D and one science course 3A/3B from the following list: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Human Biological Science, Integrated Science or Physics.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. It is available in both internal and external study modes. International onshore students on student visas are not permitted to study externally.
Course Organisation
In the first year all students study professional health practice, including evidence informed practice, health and health behaviour and Indigenous health, together with core units in health, safety and environment, human biology, chemistry, food safety and the physics associated with health safety and environment. In second year students select either the Environmental Health Major or the Health and Safety Major. In second and third years of the course, students from both majors also complete professional placements in either government or industrial settings. Students who select the Environmental Health Major undertake specialised units including food science and hygiene, the built environment, waste management and environmental noise. Students who select the Health and Safety Major undertake specialised units including occupational health management, industrial relations, injury management and safety technology.
Professional Recognition
Students who complete the Health and Safety Major are eligible for membership with the Safety Institute of Australia (not required to practise profession), The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (not required to practise profession) and the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (UK) (not required to practise profession). Graduates of the Environmental Health Major are eligible for membership with the Australian Institute of Environmental Health.
Career Opportunities
The field of health and safety has undergone significant changes during the recent past, which requires the attention of highly qualified and conceptually proficient professionals. Opportunities may exist in a wide range of private companies and government departments and organisations as safety advisors, trainers, researchers and risk managers. Many graduates also find work interstate or overseas. Environmental health graduates may enter state government departments, local government authorities and industry as environmental health officers or scientific officers. Opportunities may also exist interstate or overseas. The Environmental Health Major is the only course in Western Australia recognised for appointment as an environmental health officer.
