| Syllabus: | There is mounting evidence for the re-emergence of infectious disease as a major threat to human health, particularly as more pathogens become resistant to current antimicrobial chemotherapy. Molecular analyses of microbial pathogenesis offer new insights and solutions for the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases. This unit examines cutting-edge molecular techniques for investigating microbial pathogenesis including real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), signature-tagged mutagenesis, in vivo expression technology (IVET), microarray, genomics and proteomics. Some of the topics for detailed discussion include biosecurity and emerging infectious diseases, an update on the fight against selected current epidemics of infectious disease, molecular pathogenesis of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases, surveillance and control of agricultural pathogens, and bacteria and viruses as causative agents of cancer. |
