Syllabus: Factors controlling ground behaviour in underground mines. Excavation geometry and stability. The strength of jointed rockmasses. Strength versus stress in fractured rockmass. Overall mine sequencing strategies. The effects of blasting on stability. Determination of pillar strength and pillar design. Empirical stope design. Design validation and dilution control.
