314225 v.1 Astronomy Major

Introduction

This major can only be studied in conjunction with a Physics Major and focuses primarily on physical phenomena that largely occur beyond the Earth. Even though we seem to be finding out more and more about astronomy every day, of the top ten questions in science there are more astronomy-related questions than any other. To meet the demands of being a successful astronomer, as well as studying the nature of astrophysical phenomena, students study important additional computing and data analysis subjects. Students also have the opportunity to undertake a high level research project as part of their studies in conjunction with practising astronomers. The Astronomy major is an important pathway to postgraduate studies in this field but as graduates will have excellent quantitative problem solving, and computer programing and data processing skills they are able to work successfully in fields as diverse as the IT industry and in financial modeling.

Course Entry Requirements/Pre-requisites

Physics 3A/3B and Mathematics 3C/3D or Mathematics Specialist: 3C/3D. Completion of Physical Sciences Pre- major with a course weighted average of 65 percent.

Special Note

This major is designed to be undertaken in conjunction with the Physical Sciences Pre-major within the Bachelor of Science. The Astronomy Major can only be undertaken in conjunction with 313542 Physical Sciences Pre-major.
