171910 v.10 Bachelor of Science (Mining)

BSc(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 003884A
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas: 3 Years

Introduction

Mining engineers are responsible for the planning, design, and operation of a mine. Many responsibilities are defined by law. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates. These courses provide a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology including geology, electrical, civil and mechanical engineering, surveying, computing and environmental science, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of both people and resources.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

TEE Applicable Maths and Physics or Chemistry OR Mathematics 3C/3D and Chemistry 3A/3B or Physics 3A/3B.

Specific Requirements

STAT elements considered are E and Q. STAT applicants will be required to meet entry prerequisites by completing enabling units. This study may extend the duration of the course.

Note

Selection is based primarily on attainment in TEE subjects. Well qualified applicants lacking prerequistes may still be considered. The Enabling Course in Science and Engineering may be used as a pathway into the science course in mining and science students may transfer to Mining Engineering after satisfactory performance during their first year at university.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availablity

3 years' full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first two years of this course are offered on the Bentley campus. The final year is available only at the Kalgoorlie campus.

Course Organisation

During the course students are required to obtain a minimum of 12 weeks of approved industrial experience. A written report must be presented based on this experience. Students who perform well in the first or second years of the course may be allowed to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering).

Professional Recognition

After a set period of practical experience in the industry, graduates can apply to the Department of Mines and Petroleum in Western Australia to sit for examinations qualifying them for an Underground Supervisors Certificate or Quarry Managers Certificate.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials, including a personal computer. Some costs are required for associated field trips and a Senior First Aid Certificate.

Further Information

For further information contact the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) on freecall telephone: 1800 688 377, email: wasmadmin@curtin.edu.au or visit our website: www.wasm.curtin.edu.au.

Combined Degree Information

Mining may be combined with Civil and Construction Engineering.
