Syllabus: Spirituality of one form or another has always been fundamental to the socio-cultural fabric of South-East Asia in general and of Borneo in particular. This unit will explore the principal spiritual traditions and religions followed in Borneo, conceptualised according to roughly two phases of evolution: so-called "pagan" animism and institutionalised religiosity. The practices inherent to each will be addressed in this unit in terms of their origins, evolution and existence, as well as their tolerant cohabitation (or lack of), in ancient as well as in modern times, supplemented with real life experiences with communities and societies in contemporary Borneo.
